This photobook is a compilation of the “exhibition documentation” commissions that 1995-born Takehisa undertakes ongoingly. The exhibitions he photographs step beyond the confines of museums or galleries; venues most reflective of the age we live in, including outdoors, derelict buildings, and alternative spaces. His presence at the set-ups in such locations allowed continuous and comprehensive documentation of the relationship between people and objects involved in a contemporary exhibition. Yet the particularity of this body of work is the fact that “his steady records of other people’s art have simultaneously become his own.”
 

The title—Satsuei—was coined in Japanese, translated from Rangaku, a European body of knowledge introduced by the Dutch in the late Edo Period (1853-1868), which described “a technical process that optically anchors an image on an object.”  This term, often directly translated as “to photograph” or “to record,” evolved as a unique concept within the domestic history of photography—one that was imported at first, instead of being developed in the country. Takehisa understands Satsuei as “a technology that can show and retain the clutter of things that exist as they are,” and thus assembled the various exhibition documentations as one body of work. 

If there is a record that can only be achieved by stipulating a subject, how would it exist? This book aims to rethink the conditions of documentation or subjects today through such an act of recording.
