We are pleased to present Shopping Street, the third book by Amsterdam-based artist Mariko Kuwahara. For this project, Kuwahara conducted research during an artist-in-residence in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, focusing on a shopping arcade that has become almost entirely shuttered. The book compiles dialogues with shop owners, recorded during the period leading up to the demolition of the arcade’s deteriorating structure. Former Izakaya Restaurant, camera store owners, record store operators, and booksellers shared memories of the arcade’s past glory days bustling with tourists, issues surrounding association fees, their complex feelings about the arcade’s demolition, and thoughts on the shopping arcade’s future after demolition… Tracing the memories of one particular shopping arcade in Japan, Kuwahara unravels Showa-era Japanese society through her characteristically humorous lens. The book features a unique design element with pouch binding at the center of its pages.
